WASHINGTON – Chiefs for Change, an organization of chief state education officers committed to putting children first through visionary education reform, issued the following statement regarding the report, “Our Responsibility, Our Promise: Transforming Educator Preparation and Entry into the Profession,” released today by the Council of Chief State School Officers.

“We commend the Council of Chief State School Officers for looking at the issue of educator preparation and entry into the profession. This report offers a good starting point for addressing the critical need for stronger teacher preparation programs. However, if we are to make significant strides in breaking the cycle of ineffectiveness that exists in many of our schools, we must drastically change our thinking about the teaching profession.

“Though it is important to equip educators with the tools necessary to succeed, it is equally important to hold these professionals accountable for the work they do and the lives they touch. Meaningful reform requires bold action, such as tying growth in K-12 student achievement to teacher preparation programs and developing strong alternative licensure programs for professionals who want to enter the vocation.

“There is no doubt that administrators and teachers have a tremendous impact on student success. With the implementation of the Common Core State Standards in the 2014-15 school year, it is more imperative than ever that the teaching profession be elevated to higher professional standards so that both educators and students are able to thrive from the moment they enter the classroom.”
