Eric Smith

Former Florida Commissioner of Education & Member Emeritus

A Message from The Chief

Throughout my career, I have always based policy decisions on the fundamental belief that all students can learn. I have held all students—regardless of race, ethnicity, and family income—to the same high expectations for learning, rejecting the notion that poverty, language barriers, and family dysfunction are acceptable explanations for lack of learning in the classroom.

It is not easy to be a reform-minded education leader. It takes special care to handle the concerns of legislators, superintendents, school leaders, teachers, parents, and the public, while steadfastly passing reforms to improve student performance. However, faithful implementation of accountability, increased academic standards, and insuring and supporting effective teachers in every classroom are absolute requirements for improving our students’ opportunities for success. As Governor Bush often states, success is never final and reform is never finished.

Eric Smith

Former Florida Commissioner of Education & Member Emeritus

Eric Smith served as Florida Commissioner of Education from 2007 to 2011. He began his career in Florida more than 30 years ago as a classroom teacher. His commitment to affecting positive change in education led him to several administrative positions in Florida school districts and eventually to 16 years of serving as a district superintendent in Virginia, North Carolina and Maryland. He also served as Senior Vice President for College Readiness of the College Board and was responsible for leading the EXCELerator project.

During Dr. Smith’s tenure as Florida Commissioner of Education, the state continued to lead the nation in education reform. Under his leadership, Florida won $700 million in federal funds through the Race to the Top competition, and adopted and began implementing Common Core State Standards. In 2011, the Florida Legislature passed The Student Success Act. This ground breaking legislation allowed Florida to retain high-quality teachers and remove low-performing teachers from the classroom, created new graduation requirements and new high school grading formulas to better prepare students for college and careers, and gave parents a clear picture of their child’s academic performance. Under Dr. Smith’s watch, Florida used federal and state requirements to streamline accountability and begin a process to identify and support failing schools.

Dr. Smith received an undergraduate degree from Colorado State University, a master’s degree from the University of Central Florida in Orlando and a doctorate from the University of Florida in Gainesville.
