Tony Bennett
Former Florida Commissioner of Education & Member Emeritus
A Message from The Chief
Some have called education the civil rights issue of our generation. But as we continue a decades-long quest to achieve equal educational opportunities for all students, it’s clear that education is the civil rights issue for every generation. The bottom line is if we consistently set high expectations and deliver top-notch instruction, all children can learn. That’s why I’m excited to be part of Chiefs for Change. We are committed to putting students first and ensuring all American children receive the high-quality education they deserve.

Tony Bennett
Former Florida Commissioner of Education & Member Emeritus
Dr. Tony Bennett is an emeritus member of Chiefs of Change. He served as Florida’s Commissioner of Education from January through August 2013, and as Indiana’s Superintendent of Public Instruction from 2009 to 2012. Dr. Bennett has dedicated his life to educating students. He began his career in southern Indiana as a high school science teacher and basketball coach, quickly advancing to school administration while building a reputation as a leader with talent for school management, strategic planning and effective budgeting. As Indiana’s State Superintendent, he led the Hoosier State through its most comprehensive, student-focused education reform initiatives. Focused on greater accountability and freedom, Dr. Bennett created the nation’s most-expansive school voucher program, and saw record high graduation rates and participation in Advanced Placement courses and exams. Dr. Bennett’s leadership quickly earned him a national reputation among government and education leaders. In 2010, the Indiana Chamber of Commerce named Dr. Bennett Government Leader of the Year and, in 2011, the Fordham Institute named him Education Reform Idol.
Dr. Bennett’s high expectations for students and commitment to involving community partners carried through in Florida, and have made him a key player in national education reform efforts. He is a founding member and former chair of Chiefs for Change. Dr. Bennett received his doctorate degree in Education and his Superintendent’s License from Spalding University. He earned his Certification in Secondary Administration and Supervision, a Master of Science in Secondary Education, and a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education from Indiana University Southeast.
