Chiefs for Change CEO Mike Magee today issued the following statement:
This bill attaches strings to funding by incentivizing schools to be physically open without regard for the health and safety conditions in local communities and ties school districts in bureaucratic knots as they await federal funding they needed yesterday.
Everyone wants to open schools—especially our chiefs—but we must do it the right way and ensure that students, staff, and families are protected. The leaders in our network will continue to prioritize the health and safety of their communities with the guidance of local health experts, as they simultaneously develop high-quality learning environments for all students.
If Congress is serious about helping local school communities to reopen, it will pass a bipartisan stimulus that provides for the flexibility needed at the local level to design and implement safe learning plans for every child.
