Statement on the Insurrection at the U.S. Capitol

The Chiefs for Change Board of Directors today issued the following statement on behalf of the membership.

Today we are listening to our children—their anxiety and their questions—and doing our best to allay their fears and help them process the disgraceful violence and destruction at our nation’s Capitol. We were outraged and sickened to watch the insurrection unfold as the people’s representatives carried out one of the most sacred functions of our democracy. The federal government must thoroughly investigate the grievous security failures that allowed the breach to happen, and all those who incited or participated in the chaos must be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

The mob did not succeed. Members of Congress rightly returned to their posts and worked through the night to fulfill their duty, certifying the results of the election and affirming Joe Biden as the next president of the United States.

With President-elect Biden set to take the oath of office in two weeks, we join Americans across the country in demanding a peaceful transfer of power and urge leaders at all levels of governmentfederal, state, and local—to move forward in a spirit of bipartisanship and good faith to meet the tremendous challenges facing our nation and build a brighter future for our children.
