Statement on President Biden’s Plan to Preserve and Fortify DACA

Mike Magee, CEO of Chiefs for Change, a bipartisan network of state and district education leaders, today released the following statement:

We commend President Joe Biden for signing yesterday, his first day in office, a memorandum to preserve and fortify the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. DACA provides protection against deportation for hundreds of thousands of people who came to the United States as young childrenincluding many students, school employees, and their family members. We also applaud the president’s commitment to immediately begin the process of reuniting families separated at the U.S.-Mexico border.

In addition, we are pleased that President Biden’s proposed U.S. Citizenship Act of 2021 would provide faster pathways to citizenship for DACA recipients and other undocumented individuals. As a bipartisan network of education leaders who collectively serve more than 7 million students, our chiefs believe that all children must be free to learn, free from fear. We reiterate our call for Congress and the administration to work together and enact a comprehensive, bipartisan solution that protects Dreamers; provides certainty for students and educators; and strengthens our communities and the nation overall.
