Statement on Confirmation of Miguel Cardona as U.S. Secretary of Education

Mike Magee, CEO of Chiefs for Change, a bipartisan network of state and district education leaders serving more than 7 million students, today issued the following statement on the Senate’s confirmation of Miguel Cardona as U.S. Secretary of Education.

“Secretary Cardona is poised to lead the U.S. Department of Education at a critical moment in our nation’s history. After nearly a year of disruptions due to Covid-19, schools across the country are working to reopen and bring children safely back into the classroom for the in-person learning and supports they so urgently need. We congratulate Secretary Cardona on his confirmation and pledge to work with him in meeting President Biden’s goal of reopening schools. In addition, we look to the secretary for support as education leaders develop and implement innovative strategies to accelerate learning; to ensure equitable access to high-quality educational opportunities; to determine what students do and do not know; and to meet children’s mental health and social and emotional needs. We also encourage Secretary Cardona to work with Congress to provide additional emergency Covid relief aid for schools and universal broadband so that every child can access the information they need to succeed in today’s modern world.”
