Job Summary

Chiefs for Change is seeking an intern to join our advocacy and policy team. This individual will work closely with the chief external affairs officer and other staff members to execute communications, policy, and advocacy plans focused on issues such as expanding school choice; promoting the use of high-quality instructional materials and related professional learning; creating reliable and affordable postsecondary pathways; and providing teachers with the support they need to do their jobs well. The intern must care deeply about educational equity, the mission of Chiefs for Change, and the work of our members. The ideal candidate will have a strong policy foundation, excellent organizational skills, and an appetite for learning. This role is a remote position.


  • Conducting legislative and policy research related to key issues
  • Developing drafts of emails, press releases, public statements, op-eds, blog posts, and policy briefs
  • Assisting in the development of strategic plans for various policy and advocacy priorities
  • Assisting with event planning and management for organization-wide events or specific site visits,
  • panel appearances, or other convenings
  • Developing and maintaining relationships and partnerships with external policy, research, and nonprofit education organizations
  • Engaging in special projects as needed and assisting in cross-team projects


  • Candidates must be either college graduates or college students within one to three years of completing their degrees. A degree can be substituted with an equivalent two to four years of work experience. Other requirements include:
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills and the ability to clearly synthesize research
  • Strong organizational skills that reflect the ability to perform and prioritize multiple tasks seamlessly with excellent attention to detail
  • Highly resourceful team-player with the ability to work independently
  • Ability to handle confidential information with discretion
  • Demonstrated ability to achieve high-performance goals and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • A proactive approach to problem solving with strong decision-making capability
  • A strong work ethic
  • Experience using Google Apps (i.e. Gmail, Calendar, Drive, Docs, Forms, etc.)
    Proficient in the use of PowerPoint, Word, and Excel


The candidate must have their own computer or laptop to complete projects and tasks. The position requires up to 20 hours of work per week and offers a flexible schedule of Monday-Friday during normal business hours. Compensation is $22 an hour as a contractor (1099 position). The internship period is 12 months.
