Dr. Arsenio Romero is secretary of the New Mexico Public Education Department. He previously served as superintendent of Los Lunas Schools in New Mexico and held district leadership roles in two other New Mexico school systems: Superintendent and CEO of Deming Public Schools and assistant superintendent for instruction and turnaround at Roswell Independent School District.
Romero has more than 25 years of leadership, managerial, and executive experience. He has worked as a teacher, principal, and adjunct professor, and he was appointed to the New Mexico State University (NMSU) Board of Regents in 2020.
Romero earned a Ph.D. in educational management and development and a bachelor’s in elementary education from NMSU. He also holds a master’s in educational administration and leadership from the University of New Mexico. Romero is a member of the fifth cohort of the Future Chiefs leadership development program.
